  • ABC 13 Share Your Holidays benefiting the Houston Food Bank

    Share Your Holidays This Season

    For the sixth year, the University of Houston at Sugar Land is joining ABC 13 and the Ismaili Jamatkhana and Center for the Share Your Holidays Food Drive. This is the 44th year for the event, which will take place on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024. Collection bins are located in the Albert & Mamie George Building Rotunda, Brazos Hall near the elevators and the Technology Building near the elevators.

    University of Houston Engineers Unveil AI Model for Predicting, Controlling Pandemic Spread

    A team of engineers at the University of Houston has published a study in the journal Nature on how international air travel has influenced the spread of COVID-19 around the world.By using a newly developed AI tool, the team identified hotspots of infection linked to air traffic, pinpointing key areas that significantly contribute to disease transmission.

    Fort Bend County Housing, Mental Health Focus of UH at Sugar Land Research

    A study from the University of Houston will examine the impact of housing instability on mental health in Fort Bend County. A partnership between UH, Fort Bend County Health and Human Services and PolicyMap, a data and analytics company, received more than $500,000 from the AIM-AHEAD Consortium, a National Institutes of Health-funded organization.

    Artificial Intelligence Drives Development of Cancer Fighting Software

    University of Houston researchers and their students are developing a new software technology, based on artificial intelligence, for advancing cell-based immunotherapy to treat cancer and other diseases. CellChorus Inc., a spinoff from the University of Houston, is commercializing the UH-developed Time-lapse Imaging Microscopy In Nanowell Grids™ platform for dynamic single-cell analysis with label-free analysis.

    NASA Awards UH $1.2 Million to Strengthen Diversity in STEM and Aerospace Engineering

    NASA is awarding the University of Houston $1.2 million to grow diversity initiatives in STEM and aerospace-related engineering fields and address barriers to access and success for historically underserved and underrepresented students. The award is for a project called the Partnership for Inclusivity in Engineering Education and Research for Space, also known as PIE 2RS.

    UH Energy Hydrogen Symposium Report Highlights Gulf Coast Hydrogen Ecosystem Opportunities and Challenges

    The UH Division of Energy & Innovation recently released an in-depth report titled “The Gulf Coast Hydrogen Ecosystem: Opportunities and Solutions,” following a similarly titled symposium focused on developing a successful Gulf Coast hydrogen ecosystem. The symposium hosted last spring by UH Energy brought together industry experts, policymakers, and academics to explore the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source.

Senior Series is a series of conversations with local experts focused on the unique and complex housing related issues facing mature homeowners and their families. This month's topic is The Psychology of Letting Go. The house is too big. The yard has become unmanageable. Closets are filled to the brim. We haven’t been in the attic for decades. Despite all the signs that it’s time to simplify, many people struggle with letting go. Whether it’s saying “goodbye” to a home of many years or parting with the treasures inside, certain challenges are commonplace when it comes to downsizing, rightsizing, or relocating. We will take a deep dive into the human psyche and discuss what makes it so difficult to let go.

This performance will be in Spanish with English Subtitles. In 2019 Houston’s Mayor, Sylvester Turner, presented a proclamation making November 3rd Calavera con Calavera Day in our city. The Government of Mexico has been recognizing it by making it part of the Semana Global (World Wide Week), representing our city of Houston, along with other Day of the Dead events around the world, and the General Consulate of Mexico in Houston gave full support, due to the highly cultural content representing Mexico.

Family-History Research: Newspaper Archive

This class will focus on the ins and outs of using FBCL’s Newspaper Archive database for family-history research. Learn how to create an account, clip and save articles, and conduct searches. Newspapers can be valuable tools for family-history researchers who would like to learn more about the daily lives of their ancestors. Staff from the library’s Genealogy and Local History Department will talk about some of the many details of daily living that can be found by searching old issues of newspapers.
