Juneteenth At Miller – A Celebration Of Freedom Part 1

This celebration will commemorate the end of slavery in the United States and honor the contributions of African Americans to American music. The music will showcase a mix of traditional and contemporary jazz and inspirational sounds, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the African American community. This celebration will provide an opportunity for people to come together and reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and look towards a brighter future for all. This performance will also be live streamed from Miller Outdoor Theatre.

Juneteenth National Independence Day is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans after the Civil War. Early celebrations began locally in 1866 and spread throughout the country until it was made a federal holiday in 2021. It is also known as Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day and Black Independence Day.

Introduction to finding Civil War ancestors by using a number of sources including databases, websites and military records. We will cover how and where to obtain copies of compiled service records and pensions for both Union and Confederate soldiers. Databases such as Ancestry.com, Family Search and Fold3 will be discussed as well as holdings in the Genealogy & Local History department of the George Memorial Library.
