Sunday 1/1

New Year's Day

The first day of the year on the Gregorian calendar. New Year's Day is typically celebrated with fireworks at the stroke of midnight as the new year starts in each time zone. Common traditions include making New Year's resolutions as well as contacting family and friends.
Kwanzaa Ends
  • Location: Worldwide
A week-long annual celebration of African-American culture that is based on harvest festival traditions from various parts of Africa. Traditions include celebration of seven principles of African Heritage and a communal feast, called Karamu, on the sixth day of observance.
Haiti Independence Day
  • Location: Haiti
A public holiday in Haiti to commemorate the country's declaration of independence from France in 1804 and restoration of the country's native name. Haiti made history by being the first black republic in the world and the first country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery.

A national holiday in Myanmar that celebrates Myanmar's Declaration of Independence from the British rule in 1948.

University Branch Culinary Club: Lunar New Year

Culinary Club is a monthly potluck and recipe exchange. While we can now meet in person, we still can’t share food at this time. But we can talk about our recipes and share our experiences in the kitchen! Cook up your favorite Asian recipe with this month’s theme – Lunar New Year. We invite you to bring a photo of your dish or a short video of how you prepared it, if you like.

Ancient Civilizations & Empires: Mesopotamia & Persia

Ms. Akhtar will be lecturing on the Mesopotamian civilization and how their civilization influenced future civilizations. Emergence of agriculture in the "Fertile Crescent". Mesopotamia as "cradle of civilization": religion, writing, cities, art, architecture. Babylonians destroy Solomon's Temple of Jerusalem. Persian emperor Cyrus conquers Babylon and rebuilds Jewish Temple. Alexander defeats Persia and burns Persian capital, Persepolis.

Lunar New Year
  • Location: Worldwide
An annual 15 day festival that celebrates the start of the new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar, which also incorporates an animal from the Chinese or other Asian zodiacs. Traditions include honoring deities and ancestors, exchanging red envelopes of money, feasts, lion and dragon dances, and firecrackers.
